NDOS/4DOS colors

Greetings.
        I need to have a .BAT or .BTM file which will make the screen
bright red on black. I can do this with the color command, but every time
I issue a "cls" the old colors return. I’ve even tried re-defining the
cls command through an alias but I haven’t got that to work either. I
need the red-on-black colors to stick even after running another program.
Then I need another .BAT or .BTM file which will restore the original
color configuration. Any suggestions?

estimating prog for print industry

Does anyone out there know of a program or package designed to do
estimating for the printing industry… flexographic or letter press
in particular.  I’d really appreciate any information I can get my
hands on.  Thanks.

EMM exception using 4DOS FOR command

I have noticed that an emm exception #13 (using QEMM 7.04) occurs, for
example, when
        FOR %%input in (@CON) do echo %%input
is executed and just the enter key is pressed.
This occurs using 4DOS 5.50 rev. C. I observed this while writing a more
complicated batch file and was wondering
if anyone else has observed this.

You don’t need a BTM. Just put it in your 4DOS.INI…

 Ca> what is PC DOS 7.0 ? I thought it was DOS 6.3 .
Nope, that was the previous one.

 Ca> or is it a new release of MS DOS by IBM ? I never heard about that.
It’s out ! Just newly released…

4dos under Win 95

I am running Windows 95 and can’t figure out how to run 4dos (ver. 5.0)
as my primary command processor instead of DOS. If I run Win 95 without
config.sys/autoexec.bat I don’t have enough room left in 640k part of
memory to run some DOS programs I need. I also don’t have the ability to
do what I want at the DOS prompt. If I run config.sys/autoexec.bat
with a SHELL= pointing to 4dos, Win 95 loads BOTH, but runs DOS. Can’t
figure out how to load things high or drop command.com.

Bet you all are gonna tell me to get Take Command, right? But being
stingy (also currently laid off from work), is there a way I can run the
4dos that I already paid for? ;)

Thanks

4dos vs. Unix tcsh

I really like 4dos, but there are a few things that make me want to junk it.
Basically, I’d prefer it to act like tcsh.  Here’s a list of differences
that drive me crazy when I use 4dos:

1. File name completion:
– Doesn’t add the \ when you TAB a directory
– Cycling is stupid, I need partial completion
– It doesn’t search your path for executables
– Doesn’t use ^ properly (i.e. next filename after ^ should be an executable)

2. No "which" command to tell you which file you are running

3. The "move" command
Moving subdirectories is a pain in the ass.  If I want to relocate an entire
subdirectory to another directory, I have to give the /s option, and also
retype in the source directory name as part of the destination directory.
For example, to move \dir1 to \tmp\dir1, the command is:
  move /s \dir1 \tmp\dir1
In unix, this would be
  mv /dir1 /tmp
Much more intuitive I feel.

4. Globbing
How come * doesn’t expand to all the files and directories in a directory?
I mean, * and ? are passed as arguments to the program, right?  And then
each program has to do their own globbing?  Wouldn’t it make sense for all
globbing to be done by the shell?  There should also be a way to exclude
files using some globbing techinique, so we wouldn’t need all these silly
programs to delete all files except for one.

Well, that about covers it.

4DOS glitch

I have a program that requires a command line argument in the
form:  @filename.ext/groupname

Using 4DOS v5.5b the command is parsed correctly in a .BTM file
but not in an ALIAS.  The first sample below (test) used a .BTM
file like the one on page 117 of the manual.  The second sample
(test1) used the same commands in an Alias.

Arg2 is correctly parsed in the .BTM file, but the ALIAS splits
the argument prior to the ‘/’ character.  I realize I can use the
backquote character on the command line to keep the second
argument together, but why should it be different in an ALIAS than
a .BTM file??

d:\xfer>test /r @filename/groupname 300
Arg1=/r
Arg2=@filename/groupname
Arg3=300
Arg4=

d:\xfer>test1 /r @filename/groupname 300
Arg1=/r
Arg2=@filename
Arg3=/groupname
Arg4=300

windows 3.11

Windows 3.11 won’t load since installing 4dos 5.5 rev c. If I boot with
command.com (MSDOS v6.22) and remove all references to 4dos from my
startup files Windows runs fine. This is the only program affected. The
error message is Unsupported MSDOS Version. This makes no sense at all.
I’ve reinstalled both Windows and 4dos with the same result. Any
suggestions would be most appreciated. matt.ro…@deepcove.com
